The Adult Education Center offers complete academic refresher classes in reading, writing and mathematics to prepare for the GED test, college, trade school, military enlistment, and/or employment.  English as a second language (ESL) classes are also offered.  All programs are FREE.

ADULT BASIC EDUCATION/ GENERAL EDUCATION DIPLOMA

The Community Education Center at Stevens SChool offers free Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes to anyone who wants to improve reading, math, English, or basic computer skills.  Classes are designed to prepare students for higher education or job entry.  The General Education Diploma (GED) program is designed to prepare adults for the GED test, which is the nationally recognized measure of secondary education attainment. 

Day or evening hours are offered with the complete diagnostic evaluation and academic refresher classes in reading, writing, and mathematics to prepare for the GED test, college, trade school, military enlistment, and/or employment. Five Blair County sites currently operate. Special interest courses are offered when sufficient need exists.  All programs are FREE.

Eligibility: 18 yrs. or older and officially withdrawn from or completed high school. 

 

ELECT/ EFI PROGRAMS
The mission of the programs Education Leading to Employment and Career Training and ELECT Fatherhood initiative is to provide supportive services to pregnant and parenting high school and GED students in order to assist them in the completion of their education and to foster economic independence.

Eligibility:  Pregnant or parenting students under the age of 22 are eligible.  The student can be attending middle school, high school, or GED classes. 

 

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
The ESL program is a FREE program for adults whom English is not their native language, and who want to learn to speak, read and write English. 

Eligibility:  Anyone who was not born in the U.S. or whose native tongue is not English.  Anyone who comes from an environment where a language other than English is dominant.  Anyone who has difficulty speaking, reading, writing, or understanding the English language.



FAMILY LITERACY (814) 940-6936
Family Literacy is a FREE program that offers parents the opportunity to help their children prepare for school success while the parents work on their own educational goals.  Classes are offered for both adult education and for early childhood education.  Activities that contribute to the strengthening of literacy are planned for the family members to do together.  

Eligibility
: A family is one parent/guardian and his/her child who ranges in age from newborn to 8 yrs.  Any adult who has an education or an employment goal is eligible.
