Agency Type: Public Blair County Cooperative Extension is an educational organization that provides practical information based on research from Penn State, other land grant universities, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. There are five education programs: 4-H and Youth; Agriculture and Community Development; Family Living; the Nutrition Links; and Commercial Horticulture. 4-H AND YOUTH PROGRAM 4-H AND Youth programs help young people, age 8 to 18 years, develop life skills. Programs are operated by volunteer leaders trained to teach "hands-on" projects that provide practical educational experiences. Camp, leadership training and retreats, competitive events, and personal development activities are included. Eligibility: Youth 8 to 18 and adult volunteers. AGRICULTURE AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Educational programs in agriculture include crop, dairy and livestock production; safe, effective agricultural pest control including prudent uses of pesticides; and farm financial management. Homeowners and commercial producers are provided with information on fruit and vegetable production, landscape management, and other horticulture topics. Master Gardener volunteers help to answer gardeners’ questions. Community Development Programs empower local residents to make practical decisions concerning the quality of life available in their communities. The resources of Penn State University and other agencies involved in community development are made available to community leaders through the county extension office. Eligibility: None. NUTRITION LINKS (EXPANDED FOOD AND NUTRITION EDUCATION PROGRAM) The Nutrition Links programs provide nutrition education to low-income families, youth and adults. Eligibility: Families, youth and adults with limited resources. FAMILY LIVING The Family Living Program offers printed materials and instruction for adults in an out-of-school setting. Topics covered include resource management (money management and housekeeping), food buying, food safety, and food preservation, nutrition, health and wellness, parent education, child development, consumer and home environment issues. The program goal is to improve the quality of life for county families. Eligibility: None.
